Burt and Marjorie Liebert recently published a novel, Out of the Cage, which reflects their long-time interest in sustainability and social justice. The Lieberts also just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Burt Liebert hails from Tucson, Arizona, where his boyhood hikes in the surrounding desert inspired his love of nature and determination to help preserve it. As a youth he had two conflicting ambitions: to become a high school teacher or an actor. After graduating from University of Arizona and obtaining a Master’s Degree from Goodman Theatre (Chicago Art Institute), he combined his two dreams by becoming a high school drama teacher, an occupation he followed for fourteen years. For the next sixteen years he taught at the University of California, Davis, where he is now lecturer emeritus. More recently he organized and directed Pied Piper Theatre, a program for young audiences. He was education director for Peace Corps Micronesia and consultant to the California State Department of Education. He has published two textbooks on language education and edited a six-volume series on teaching survival skills for handicapped children. His other publications include The Kid From The Other Side, a novel for young readers; and A Terrible Tale of a Dreaded Dragon, a play for young audiences.
He keeps a blog about his recent book at http://outofthecagenow.blogspot.com/
Marjorie Liebert was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She began studying art under Max Beckmann at Brooklyn Museum Art School, later at the Art Students League. She studied theatre design at Goodman Theatre, Chicago, and earned her BA and MA degrees from California State University and her teaching credential from University of California. In addition to her work in art, she was a special education teacher for fifteen years.
She has worked in New York as a commercial artist, making window displays for Macy’s and Gimbel’s department stores. She was theatre designer for Redwood City Players and Pied Piper Theatre. Her work has been on display in numerous galleries, including the Triton Museum in Santa Clara. Her work depicts her intense love for nature, be it waves crashing on the rocks, a brilliant sunset, or a giant Saguaro cactus reaching into the night sky.
The Lieberts have four grown children, five grandchildren, and six foster grandchildren. Out of the Cage is their plea to preserve the resources of this planet, so our children and grandchildren––and all who come after them––can enjoy this bountiful earth.
